Program Notes

Exhortation III, for double bass solo, is a technical tour de force which explores the limits of technical difficulty for the double bass.  Special bowing and fingering techniques, unusual harmonics, and very rapid passagework contribute to the extraordinary technical challenges of Exhortation III

In addition to its technical challenges, the work explores a dramatically wide expressive curve, ranging from extremes of quiet lyricism to powerful, rhythmic, highly-charged passages.

Exhortation III is dedicated to bassist Michael Cameron, who premiered the work in fall 1996 at the Crane School of Music, State University of New York College at Potsdam.
