Program Notes
Exhortation I, for alto saxophone solo, begins with an angular, brilliant flourish, but almost immediately, this flourish is opposed by lyrical material. The constant alternation of the two styles displays the wonderful versatility of the saxophone.
Exhortation I is dedicated to Robert Faub, who premiered the work in spring 1996 at the Crane School of Music, State University of New York College at Potsdam.
